Are Climbing Gyms the Same as Outdoor Climbing?

Hi,

I want to become a climber but I'm not sure how to start. I live in Connecticut and there aren't many real rock climbing places around but there are plenty of indoor climbing gyms. Does this make a difference?

Drew M.

Mike says:

Thank you for your email, Drew. Congratulations for wanting to start rock climbing!

Climbing is a great sport for working all of your muscle groups, building core strength and an overall sense of wellness.  Climbing will provide you a way to overcome certain fears like the fear of heights, falling and the fear of having nothing to do.

Don't worry about climbing on the real rock for now, a climbing gym is a great place for you to learn the basics.  Pay attention the the gym staff's instructions on how to tie in, belay, foot work, etc.  Above all, observe the other climber's techniques there.

When you feel comfortable climbing in the gym and leading the sport routes there, read my newest article on sport climbing, buy a guide book to the nearest sport climbing area and hop in the car! For local climbing check rockclimbing.com for somewhat informative areas to climb.

To get started climbing, read the beginner's guide.

This will give you a good overview of rock climbing.  There is also a two part series on how beginner's can get going.  Read the gear list and buying climbing shoes articles, climbing tips and when you are ready to graduate from the climbing gym you can start taking road trips to cliffs near you.

All the best Drew, keep in touch and CLIMB ON!!
